Thing 12 is about Wikis. I can actuallly say that this is one thing that I am familiar with. I have been using the Leadership Wiki for several years now and it is a great way for a group of people to communicate and keep all of the information in one location. It is easy to update and add new information.
I do agree that it is a great timesaver and saves a lot of time rather than using email to coordinate activities and other events.
I liked the video and the topic of planning a camping trip. It was really a simple way to descibe how a wiki works.

Thing 11 - Social Media
Today I learned about Social Media. It is a way to get news information from sources all over the world from the internet. I checked out the sites listed and found them all to be full of stories and information. I checked out DIGG, Reddit, Newsvine & Mixx. I was a littlet overwhelmed with all of the info available on these sites. I can see how they can be useful when you need to get the lastest information about a topic.
I really liked the video that explained how Social Media works. It made it real easy to understand.
As for me, I really enjoy reading the newspaper every morning. It is a part of my morning routine. I don't know if I could ever give my paper up.

Thing 10 - Tagging and Delicious
Today I learned about tagging and delicious.
Tagging is a way to organize your files by using key words. This makes it easy to find your information. You can easily search for things
I also learned about Delicious. I like this a lot. It is amazing how you can find any topic that you are interested in and all of the websites and links that are tagged. You can bookmark a webpage and add tags in different categories to organize your bookmarks.
I had a lot of fun with Delicious. I looked up recipes, vintage jewelry, decorated sugar cookies, and several other topics that I find interesting.

Thing 9 - Sharing slides - photos, databases and slide share
Thing 9 has many great ways to share photos, presentations and other information. You can set up these accts easily with entering a few lines of contact information.
I set up a FLICKR Account and I plan to set up some of my home photos on this account. We use the Flickr account here at NEFLIN and it is nice to have a place where our members can go and share events with other libraries.
Brad showed me how to use the slide share. I went to the site and found the link to David Lee Kings workshop presentation.
I'm still trying to get comfortable using all of these new tools. There are a lot of new things that you can do using these new technologies.

From the sound of the title I wasn’t too sure what this was all about. Mashups are websites that you can go to and do fun things with you photos.
I really liked the Big Huge Labs site. It was fun making a puzzle out of the NEFLIN staff Annual Meeting photo. I surprised Brad and sent it to him in an email.
I also looked at Flickr Color and all the different ways you can add color to change photos.
I especially liked spell with Flickr. I will spend some time and do some fun things with my home photos.

This 8 is about communication tools that are available on the Web. I will be learning about how email, IM, and text messaging, Web Conferencing tools and how these tools will make communication easier.
I watched the You Tube video on Instant Messaging from the University of Buffalo. It’s amazing how you can use these new methods to market services. It would have been a great tool for me to use when I was in school and when my kids needed help with assignments. I like the “Ask a Librarian” service. This was a great advertisement on IM, Google Talk- Yahoo! Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
Instant messaging (SMS- Short Message Service) can be sued to send a message up to 160 characters. You can use letters, numbers and symbols in the Latin alphabet. Text messaging provides a way to chat with someone when you are in an environment where you need to be quiet.
Web Conferencing is a way to conduct meetings, training, tours, etc. over the internet. I have participated in several Lyrasis online classes and online training is a great way to learn and participate without leaving your home or office. We are beginning to offer more online desktop training to our members through OPAL, LEAD, and Lyrasis. Many members are taking advantage of this opportunity in the midst of tight budgets with no travel money or staff to fill in when they attend face-to- face training. These programs are also archived so you can go back and do a refresher, or finish completion of the class if you were interrupted before the class ended.
I use email as my primary method of communicating with our members. I handle a large volume of registrations. I like email because you have a paper trail to follow. I have my email set up with folders so I can file specific emails. I find it easy for me to find information and it saves time over telephone calls.
I haven’t used the Instant Messaging. I know that the younger generation use this method to communicate more that making a telephone call.

I’m back! I have been busy with the end of year tasks and today is my first day back with working on my 23 Things. I am still a little unsure of using these sites on the internet. I just can’t imagine that all of these cool tools are free to use. I looked at online generators today and tried a few on the list, but my favorite is the Image Chef. I really enjoyed being creative with all of the cool things you can do with pictures. I used a picture of my dog Max to make a puzzle, ID card, and a trading card. This was really fun!
These generators can be use to create all kinds of images that you can use to teach concepts, promote activities in your library, they can be added to websites, powerpoint presentations, calendars, etc. I’m sure that the ways to use these images are endless depending on the amount of time you have to create them.
This was great and I can’t believe it was free!

Today I learned about some of the Blog search tools that are out there. I think this is a great way to find information about things that you are interest in. It is also nice that you can subscribe to the feeds and have information sent directly to you.
There are many different ways you can search for information. You can search by using key words and for information that has been tagged in blog posts. You search by subject.
I went to the Technorati search engine and looked up a few things. I also checked out the Google Blog search engine and and the Blog Pulse engines. I had a lot of fun searching by key word and finding information about subjects that interest me. I found articles about Healthcare Reform, vintage jewelry, decorating cupcakes, and digital cameras.
I am very excited about these new tools that I learned about today. I can’t wait to spend some more time searching for information.

I made a commitment to complete the 23 Things by May 2010. I think this will be a great opportunity to learn some new things that I will be able to use in my business and personal life. I will have to admit that I am very shy about putting my words and thoughts out there for others to read. I am also not real comfortable with all of the new technologies. It seems like I learn something new and then something changes. I grew up in a time when things were simple, and I feel comfortable with simple things and I get a little nervous with complicated things. Maybe it is my fear of failure, that I might make a mistake. Well, aside from all of my fears, I will try my best to learn some new things and you never know, I might like using them.
I watched Steve Abram’s video and he is correct when he tells us that learning new things is a choice, and that we should set a priority to set aside time each day to learn new tools.
I went to Steve’s link to John Blyberg’s blog and I found it very interesting about all of the tools that are out there and all of the different ways you can use them to communicate to different groups of people.
I made a list of some of the new web tools that I read about in Thing 2:
1. Libraries can use You Tube as a way to share videos of story hours, teen contests, rock concerts, gaming nights, literacy training, etc. This is a great marketing tool to get the word out to the patrons about what is going on in their library.
2. You can also use Second Life as a way to promote events like book clubs, teen outreach, and others.
3. Facebook is gaining a lot of popularity lately with the older generation. It is a great place to connect with political groups, friends, and family. You can create your own page and you can put restrictions on who is allowed to view your information. I joined Facebook, and I am not quite sure yet how much I like knowing what my friends are up to every minute of the day. I do like the privacy feature though. I was also pleased to find out that I can delete feeds from my friends so it doesn’t clutter up my page.
4. I think I missed one of the tools. I will try to clear this up later.

6. Podcasts can be used to tell stories. This is another way that libraries can promote services and make announcements to the community.

We use this with the Leadership Institute. Participants can go to the Wiki to communicate with others in the group and keep up with homework and announcements.
8. Ning is a way to create communities within communities. You can find and organize supporters for a campaign.
9. Twitter is a way to keep everyone in contact and informed. You can send out emails to a large group at one time.
10. Mozes is a way to build a messaging dashboard to tweet mailing lists with community news, events, and ideas.
11. Now Public – this is a Tremours site. I’m not real sure what this is all about. I think I will learn something about this later.
